Deception Pass Campground

Deception Pass Campground

2010-05-07

On Day Three of the bicycle trip, I pretty much bonked. We had optimistically hoped for 150 km; we did 90 km. But as a result, we stayed at Deception Pass, a really lovely campground, and arrived around 4:30 pm, leaving lots of daylight to enjoy. At the registration booth, we chose one of the cheaper "hiker/biker sites" that lie up a little wooded path, inaccessible for car camping. The extremely friendly man checking us in suggested his favourite site but offered that if we wanted to change our minds after looking at them, we could come back to the guard booth -- and then he paused mid-sentence, looked at us, and changed his mind. We found out shortly that this was because getting to the campground from the guard booth involved a nice 9-10% grade climb and descent. So after setting up camp, we scrapped plans of riding back out to the nearest gas station and visitor information centre, and just settled in for the evening.
